Shotgun disassembly question
I have a Harrington and Richardson, inc. breakaction 410 shotgun that I am attempting to completely break down. I have everything except the trigger housing taken apart. Any advice on how to do this would be great.

Respectfully speaking, that is as far as one should take it down, unless you are a competant gunsmith. High pressure break cleaner, and some Break Free CLP, should be all you need for proper, routine maintenance.

I tend to agree.
If you cannot resist the temptation to continue the disassembly then you will need to drift out the pins in the receiver. These pins "should" be drifted right to left (the pin exits on the left) due to a factory tapper, but don't always count in it. There are a lot of springs nestled up inside that receiver and they are tricky to remove and even trickier to get back in correctly. The trigger guard cross pins and the removal of the trigger is the easiest to manage, after that it becomes increasingly more difficult.
Unless the gun is not functioning properly there is nothing to be gained by a total disassembly.0 -
Look close at the pins. Some models have fins on one side and need to be drifted out that side not pushed threw. To put it back together you need to make some slave pins to hold things in aliegnment (a piece of 16 penny nail works for me) and I keep them in a hole under the buttplate. I have never fooled with the hinge pin. There aren't a lot of parts in there but some folks can't put their Ruger MII back together. Easy beans,I took an H&R Topper, 20ga
apart when I was 14.The gun wouldn't
fire any more.
I tapped the pins out with something and
took the guts out,come to find out one of
the legs of the hammer spring was broken.
I bent the remaining leg in the opposite direction,
re-installed and used the gun for years afterward.
I sold it when I was an adult.

Thank you for all the great tips. The only reason that I wanted to break it down further is so that I can scrub it down and use a "Blue and Rust remover" on the metal to get the rust off. 0 -
Blue + rust remover will also remove the case colors as well. I don't think thats what you want to use. Maybe some OOO steel wool and some Break Free. 0 -
If that pic shows the worst of the rust try cleaning it with Kroil and burlap.
Wet a rag with Kroil and wrap the receiver in it. Put rag and all in a ziplock bag and let it ruminate on it's own for a day or three to let the Kroil penetrate and loosen the rust. Use more Kroil and a scrap of burlap to vigorously scrub the loosened rust off.
Don't use steel wool of any grade as it will attack the case color more readily that it will the rust.0 -
