Handi Rifle issue
Hello .
I have a Handi-rifle with 3 brls
all fitted at the factory 223/243
and 7.62x39.
I've been using Wolf and Herter's
ammo and I have FTF's.
I have to recock multiple times to get a bang
and sometimes no bang at all.
The 223/243 go bang everytime and impress me with the
accuracy.
Anybody have any experience with this?
I had no issues with my SKS but sold it.
Now I'm stuck with 700 rds of ammo.
Thanks-Ron

You nailed it...I bought a 7.62x39 barrel for my Handi rifle and could not use wolf ammo. I thought there was a fix you could do by installing a heavier hammer spring? I never tried that, I sent the barrel back to NEF for a refund. They don't tell you when you buy the barrel that the rifle will not fire Russian ammo![:(!]
You're not "stuck" with 700 rounds of ammo, just go get yourself another SKS, Saiga or AK!0 -
You might look at the firing pin protrusion with the transfer bar up and the hammer down. I have seen some that the pin was short and had to act as an inertia striker without the mass to do the job properly. Look too at the undercut on the hammer face. I have also seen broken firing pins cause miss fires. Have never used current Herders ammo but all the wolf stuff I have seen isn't top drawer. 0 -
I checked the firing pin
and it seems ok.
Like I said earlier,
The 223 and 243 barrels
work great.
I'm cheap, so I'm gonna pull
the "bad ammo" and re-assemble it in my brass
with my primers (after I check a few reloads)
Thanks-Ron0 -
Have you tried the 7.62X39 barrel with domestic factory ammo? That will give you an indication if the problem is a gun problem or an ammo problem. 0 -
I'm gonna load some up this weekend
and find out.
Prolly why there aren't too many barrels
around, but I can't het it out of my
head if that I can get this barrel working
it would be a good 60yd deer caliber.0 -
I pulled 12 rounds of Heter's ammo.
What a chore,my ears are still ringing
from whacking that kinetic puller on
an old oak desk.
I won't pull anymore,too much damn work.

Have you tried to seat the bullets about .1 inches deeper first; it breaks the sealent bond. I like my old Herter's collet bullet puller for task like this. I'd be wacking it on concrete or something else hard, wood sucks up the energy.
I still think that the rifle can be reworked to knock off tough primers, and you are welcome.0 -
Thank you Charlie, I will try that.
Great idea!

I have a handi in 7.62. It's the ammo. Mine won't shoot Wolf but goes bang every time with factory brass ammo. I bought the barrel for the same reason you did. Cheap plinker for all the surplus ammo I had. 0 -
Send it back to NEF. My son had a 243 that the action would open every time it was fired. 0
