Winchester Model 1890 Third Model Question
My friend wants to sell me an 1890 with a serial number in the 290,000 range. It has matching numbers and has the 3rd model bolt. Not only that but the left hand side locking lug is wider than other 3rd models. I have seen second models with serial numbers as high as 320,000. This doesn't add up to me. Any thoughts?
I do not have a picture of the actual gun. See picture for sketched in lines of how wide the left hand lug is relative to a normal one.

Are you saying that the left side locking lub is bigger than the right side lug?
Your are correct in that something smells funny in Dennmark[:0]0 -
Yes, The left lug is larger than the right. The right appears to be "normally" sized. It looks good and clean, not modified or mutilated. What are your thoughts on the fact that it has a 3rd model bolt and a second model serial?
here is a cell phone pic that he sent.
blown up a bit:
My 3rd model style bolt on my 1906:

If it was near the transition period it could have parts from both variations of third models. 0 -
I have no explanation for that rifle, other than to say that I seriously doubt that it is factory original. 0 -

What variations of 3rd models were there? I do not know of any.
Bert- Since it has a 290,000 serial number, do you think it is a second model receiver modified for a 3rd model bolt?
It also has a triangular loading port on the magazine.0 -

Possibly, but there is no telling for sure. The triangular loading port is not correct either. I suspect that somebody pieced that rifle together with spare parts.0 -
I will just have to buy it and see. 0 -
Update.
The gun was a mutt, the bolt was modified "by someone who didn't know what they were doing". But the barrel was an original first model so I just bought the barrel.0
