Ithaca Grades
Okay have an Ithaca Flues SxS.
How do you tell the grade of them? I have noticed Field Grade, Grade No.1,
Grade No.2, Grade No.3, Grade No.4,and so on.
So how do you tell the grade on them? Would love to know the grade on it.

Hello the pictures are nice, but pictures of your Ithaca will get you closer to the answer of your question quicker[:o)]JUST SAYING. The guns are all the same design the difference is mostly in the amount of engraving if any along with the checkering pattern . Also the figure of the wood in the forearm and butt-stock. 0 -

Yes the last picture is of a repair in the stock. Did not notice it until I was taking the pictures.

Field grade. The Grade 1, 2, 3, etc. will have a 1, 2, or a 3 in place of the "F" on your gun. 0 -
Just a gun with a cracked stock. Looks like someone did something funny with the chambers. An old gun like that should have chambers as smooth as a teens butt, not all wrinkled like a geesers butt.
Also looks like it may have been reblued. Some odd marks from wear (butt plate) and places that look like they have been over polished (last E in STEEL). Good case colors on the receiver.
Looks suspect from the pictures. Would need to get hands on it to tell for sure.0 -
As the others have stated this gun is a F "field grade " nice old gun I am not so sure it has been reblued the reason I base this opinion is the case color looks 100 % original to me and in the condition of the Case color there would be very little chance that the outside of the barrels which are matching serial of the receiver would need rebluing I may be wrong but that is my opinion. However I do believe the chambers
have been rusted and slightly pitted and someone has taken a Brake cylinder HONE and tried to "POLISH out the RUST/PITS" they did not do a very good JOB. . The stock repair looks like it had a better craftsman then the barrel Hone . But both of these repairs will surely reduce the guns value. I would think in this condition $400.00 would be absolute TOP dollar on its BEST day and most days not bring this much.0 -

I just wanted to know. It has been in my late father-in-laws collection.
If I know him he got it for a song from probably a widow or divorcee.
He was good at doing deals like that. But it was probably a widow getting ride of her late husbands guns.
I know he would have never reblued the barrels or honed the cylinders.
He was in the gun business for 45 years. He was a gunsmith also. But I know he wouldn't
have done anything to a Ithaca. He had to much respect for them.
I pulled it out of one of our climate controlled storage areas a few weeks ago.
