30-40 Krag carbine
I recently aquired a mint 1899 Krag carbine serial no. 2876XX, there was a piece of paper in the butt stock with info on the owner but it fell apart trying to open it. I'm working on piecing it together but it's a bigger job that I thought.I'm looking for a professional to help me.Is there a web site that has information on serial numbers and where they were shipped or who purchased them? That may shed some light on the original owner. Thanks Dave

All Krags were manufactured at the Springfield Armory for the War Department. So, that would make the original owner "the US Government".
The M1899 carbines were made 1899-1904; I am unaware of any public records that would be more specific.
My SWAG is that most of the Krag's were sold as surplus to Bannermann's, who resold them to public.

EDIT: Dave's carbine falls within the appropriate range (222609-362256).0 -
Neal is spot on with his reply. You want to make sure it is the real deal, I don't have the serial number list in front of me, but carbines only fall into a certain range of numbers. There is a cottage industry out there producing fake carbines. Posting pictures so we could look at the rifle would help.

There have been reports over the years of soldiers putting notes or letters inside the buttstock of their rifles. I suggest you contact a museum that does old book and document restorations. They are familiar with what happens to paper over the years and may be able to either help you or forward you to someone who can. Good luck. 0 -
