How is the name spelled?

Is the last name spelled Middlestead or Middlested...the guy that developed the 22-243 Midd. I googled it and it comes up both ways...which is right?

  I would think the former is the way most would spell it.

  San Diego directory and phone book lists him as Paul Middlested
