M1 Garand

I just got a correct grade M1 from CMP. I don't know a whole lot about them, I field stripped it and cleaned it by using the instructions included. Everything looks great. I was wondering though, the instruction say I should have it looked over by an experienced gunsmith before firing. Is this just a c.y.a. statement, aren't these rifles headspaced and test fired? Thanks, John

  Just bought one and now have the question - aside from one at a time is there any way to easily load the clips?

  You can pull the slide back and see the barrel date. But most if not all Garands have been reconditioned at one time or another so usually they don't jive with the receiver. I was fortunate enough to get a really old one from a guy in MI years ago with a barrel date 10/43 which is my birth month and year!

  The barrel date only tells you when the barrel was made.
  
  To find out when the receiver was made, we have to look up the serial number in a reference book. Assuming, of course, that it is a USGI M1 rifle.
  
  To find out if parts, or the entire rifle are original, we take numerous photos & show them to someone with a lot of reference books.

  Match your serial number up with thoes provided on this site and if the barrel is the same then most likley you have the original barrel and the receiver.
