A Marlin rifle question
I am working on a old Marlin Model 80-DL. The bluing is a brown patina now, it has the factory rear peep sight, [missing the center disk [:(]], the gun has no serial number stamped anywhere I can find.
The stock is being stripped for refinishing and looks like fine grained Walnut with no fancy figure. The different thing about the stock is a swelling in front of the magazine area, almost like a target rifle or a bench-rest type swell. Is this a factory option for this old rifle? Is there anyway to determining when it might have been made? Where might I find the center disc for the rear peep sight. I was going to drill and tap it for a scope but if the disc is available I might just clean it up and leave the metal all original.

The 80-DL had a "semi-beavertail" forearm. Shop around (flea-bay) and the apertures ARE available. The DL was made 1940-1965 or so. No serial number because it never had one- not required by law on rifles until 1968 Gun Control Act. Unfortunately, unlike Remingtons that can be dated from barrel codes, I know of no way to date a NSN Marlin. Surprisingly accurate rifles. Be advised that there is a "new style" and an "old style for bolts, extractors, etc- and rifle was made with several different trigger guards (at different times) 0 -

Find out who made the peep sight. The threads are different for smoe makers. There's one aperture on the auction side and a bunch on ebay. 0 -

The Williams Gun Sight Co makes a replacement for the receiver sight on the Marlin 80DL/81DL. It is Williams # 5D81.
Also at http://www.aperturesnmore.com you can get a replacement aperture (peep) sight insert disk for the 80DL. I ordered thru him & he is great (and inexpensive).0 -

Thanks that link is perfect! It is a semi-bevertail, stock I am thinking Tung oil or boiled Linseed for the finish.0
