The five-shot S&W's of your vintage would be one of two:

.38 S&W Spl known as the Chiefs' Special (Model 36)

.38 S&W known as the Terrier (no model).

Go over to the auction side, and input both revolvers. You will be able to get a visual as to which one fits your recollections.

After 1957 to the end of production, the 5 shot, .38 S & W's with the 2" barrels, were known as Model 32's.

The one you want is the Police Version, it was the model 33. 4 inch barrel square butt.

It seems you have what 5mm is refering to, but before they began using model numbers in 1957. You have a .38 Regulation Police pre-model 33. After 1957 they were called the model 33.

The light WE need on this subject is the flash on your digital camera.

We can be of greater assistance if you would post photos of your gun, good enough for us to read all markings, including the serial number.

would be happy to include a pic if I had one>>> On the other hand if I had said firearm in possession this question would be moot......
