Paint removal

Hi, I am looking to strip paint of off the receiver and barrel for a Savage 24VA that I picked up. It is already worn in some areas and I can see good bluing underneath on the barrel and clear case colorings on the receiver. My understanding is paint stripper will not hurt the bluing, is that right? What about the case colorings?

This has potential to be a nice little find and I figured I would ask for others experience before I head into uncharted waters.

  What will remove paint from a barrel & not hurt the blue?

  I wouldn't even consider paint stripper. Most are ammoniated and I wouldn't want to risk the case color.
  
  Try soaking it in lacquer thinner first. If the paint will start to loosen scrub with a Soft natural bristle brush or burlap.

  If lacquer thinner, by itself does'nt work, try mixing the lacquer thiner 1:1 with acetone. That should do it.
  Be careful when handling acetone. It is toxic so don't breathe its fumes and avoid getting it on your clothes and skin--you can absorb it through your skin and it has a nasty effect on your kidneys and liver. It is extremly flammable and its fumes are explosive; so wear rubber gloves and use it outdoors well away from any source of ignition.
  Despite its nasty nature, it is a wonderful paint remover.
  I would suggest that before soaking your parts in the laquer thinner/acetone mixture, test out a bit on a part that is not to apparant visually. That will tell you the effect of the mixture on the bluing, etc.

  check your local auto parts for Berkibiles 2+2 gum cutter. Might be the same as any carb choke cleaner. Works on most non-factory car paint and the crud on hoses and carbs.

  very simple! use standard nail polish remover!it will take paint right off. dont spill it on the table though, it will eat varnish real quick! i know this from experiance!

  Always start with the fingernail and work up the chemical and abrasive chain,

  Thanks for the responses. They jogged my failing memory and I remembered using Goof Off once on a case colored rifle that had been "speckled" with house paint. Happy to report it took the paint right off of this rifle as well, case colors are present and look good, bluing also in pretty good condition.
