Source for 30-03 ammo?
Considering an 1895 chambered in 30-03.
Not much fun if you can't shoot it, and The usual suspects do not seem to manufacture 30-03 ammo.
Does anyone know of a source?

I looked through the old threads before I posted, and saw that 30-06 was probably going to work in the rifle. The goal is to find a source for 30-03, not to shoot 30-06 through the rifle.

As I recall, the 30-03 is the same as the 30-06 except the case is slightly longer and the bullet is a round nose design and somewhat heavier than the standard '06 military ball. Maybe someone can correct any failures in my recall, but I think a 30-06 will chamber and fire safely in a 30-03 chambered rifle in safe working order. I do seem to remember that there was some problem with the pressures of the '06 peening the face of the 1895's bolt and leaving it concave. I expect hangfire Bob or Bert H. will be able to add or correct as needed. 0 -
The difference between the 30-03 and the 30-06 case , is the length of the neck , with the 03 being longer . 30-06s will work fine in your Win. 1895 . 0 -
Since the usual commercial basis for reviving an obsolete cartridge is so the respective guns can be shot, and since .30/06 ammo with 220 gr. bullets is entirely satisfactory in a .30/03, it is highly unlikely anyone has ever done so.
Fifty years ago NORMA offered straight, un-necked '06 head-size cases for wildcatters; I believe there is someone else doing the same right now (check the Web). If these cases are a little longer than standard cases, .30/03s could be made from them. (They are also just the thing to make proper .400 Whelen cases.)0 -

Simply reload 30-06 brass with 220-grain bullets. Keep the pressure to factory specification, as the 1895 frame is prone to strectching.0 -

Yep.. And use round-nose, not spitzer.. The O.A.L. is the same for both the '03 and the '06.. The round nose will come closer to matching the throat in the '03.. That's the basic difference between the two.. The only "source" for originals is from collectors.. I know I have a couple, but you can't have one!![8D]0 -

And thanks to all that responded. I've got a couple 95s in 30-06 and one in 30-40. The 30-03 was to add to the set, but if I can't shoot 'original' ammo through it (I don't see myself reloading in the near or distant future) it is not as attractive.
