Browning Hi Power Issue

I picked up a Browning Hi Power 40 S&W at a pawn shop and the problem is it has something maybe glued to the bottom of the dust cover. I expect its a mount for some kind of laser but I would like to get it off. I would expect it was put on with epoxy but don't know. Any ideas how I should proceed? Thanks.

  I try acetone first for anything on a gun.
  
  Then, maybe methyl bromide.
  
  Or, something really cold like liquid nitrogen or smoke alarm tester containing tetrafluroethane, then rap with a hammer.
  
  Lots of other solvents & methods. But, all them should be used with a respirator & eye/skin protection.

  I believe if you stick it in a freezer for a day the cold will weaken the epoxy sufficiently so that the plastic part can be removed. You will still have to use a strong solvent like acetone to remove the residue left on the pistol.

  Take a 1 lb lead block, cut a dove tail into block and use two three set screws to lock block to mount. Shoot that Hi Power, I'd be supprised if it held more than a few rounds. Warm metal and solvents good choice. You might look inside to make sure bubba didn't put screws from the inside.

  If the pistol has a 'polymer' finish, do not use solvents.
  Try the freezer trick and a light tap with a wood mallet.
  You will be happy with the pistol in cal. 40S&W, I have two.

  No screws inside the dust cover. It's in the freezer on top of a pile of ribeyes as we speak. Will give it a smack tomorrow. I think the finish is just blue steel. Will look closer before using solvent. If it pops off we'll have a cookout with the steaks.

  If that's the MK III with an ambi safety, white outline sights and dovetail front sight I think the finish is epoxy or spray on of some sort. I have the same pistol. Just a guess but I'm thinking anything strong enough to eat the epoxy holding that thing in place will also eat the finish. I'd wonder if any sort of violent removal will tear off the finish.

  It is a MK III with those three features. I'm not sure if the finish will come off when I try to get the piece to turn loose but guess we'll find out soon.

  Ok took it out of the freezer and a couple of raps on a piece of hardwood and it popped right off. The finish appears to be ok so far. As soon as it assumes room temperature I'll start working with the acetone to see if that will clean up the glue residue.
