Knife Guys-J.Russell & Co. Skinning knife???'s
Bought a old skinning knife at an estate sale today, the blade is marked " J. Russell & Co." Below that is "Green River Works" along with a diamond shape stamping. The handle is a 5 pin style which apparently is older than the same knives with the brass bolsters. I have a couple questions though. Can I tighten the handles and how? The handles are in alright shape except for being a little loose.
Also I would like to use it, it needs only a light sharpening on the blade, but is there any special care involved with a knife this old?(the company merged with Dexter in 1933 and last used that stamping then), I have a feeling its a lot older than that.

EDIT: Yes, this one is quite obviously old, the marking is stamped, not etched, as well as the 5 pin design, which points to an older age.
Any idea of what the pins where made of? I assumebrass was used?

Swell the pins w/a couple of punches. Put one appropriate sized punch pointed up in a vise. Carefully (best 2 person job) place one side of pin on the punch & hold steady there. Then tap the other side w/a hammer & punch. 0 -

I bought bare blades(one could also buy scaled knives)in the early 80s marked the exact same way. The markings were more of a laser etching, rather than a "stamping". The wording/design was what you describe though. May be able to buy them still? Good blades BTW.0 -
The ones with the logo stamped into the blades are older. I just sold one like you describe (five pins, stamped)for 65.00 on another auction site. 0 -
The markings are acid etched, or sandblasted.
Don't try to use 2 punches! Lay the handle flat on an anvil, and use a very small hammer to lightly tap the rivets. You want to lightly peen the heads on each side to tighten the handles.0
