HP vs FMJ
I have an SKS and can make a good buy on a 1000 rd case of 7.62x39 Wolf brand ammo for $180. They are hollow points instead of full metal jacket. What is the main difference and how well will the HP work in a SKS with a 30 round clip. Thanks.

The original SKS's made in the various Iron Curtain countries, came with a integral 10 magazine. They work fine with any of the Wolf ammo.
If your SKS has one of the U.S. made 30 round magazines, you might have problems with the Wolf ammo. I've owned a number of different SKS's over the years. None of them were reliable with the aftermarket U.S. made hi-cap mags.0 -

First of all, its a "magazine" not a "clip".
Second, 30 round magazines for SKS rifles are notoriously unreliable.
But *IF* you are one of the lucky few who happens to have a 30 round setup that's reliable, and it runs fine with FMJ ammo, it will probably also run fine with hollow point ammo.
My SKS guns run fine with hollowpoint ammo from the stock 10 round fixed magazine.
Just realize that the Russian made hollowpoint ammo DOES NOT expand reliably, and is probably NOT ideal for hunting. Basically its just ordinary FMJ ammo that was given a small hollowpoint to classify as "hunting" ammo in places that restrict military type ammo.
Edit: For plinking or target shooting, the hollowpoint will run fine, and its been my experience that the Barnaul stuff is a little more accurate than the typical Wolf FMJ ammo. But if you do want to hunt, I'd suggest finding some of the SOFT POINT ammo instead. Its only a little bit more expensive than the hollowpoint, but it should perform much better on game.0 -
There's no real difference in Russian FMJ vs. HP in the bullets; the HP has a miniscule dimple in the point, won't reliably expand, and should cause no difficulties in feeding vs. the FMJ stuff.
If you want hollowpoints; make your own, or buy some Hansen soft points.
Reliability of your 30-rounder will depend on make & how you install it; some don't work very well, and some work just fine-stay away from the USA brand due to sloppy tolerances on feed lips, or learn to adjust them.0 -
As has been posted, the JHP in the Russian ammo is basically a FMJ bullet with a little hole drilled in it, treat it as such. It should go bang in your SKS and perforate whatever target you're shooting at. (I never had a misfire shooting it with the SKS I owned years ago.)
If you're a hunter or want to use the SKS for defensive purposes, spend the $$ on actual hunting-bullet ammo from any of the major manufacturers.0
