Using rifled slugs with chock: Yes/No??
I have two twenty gauge shot guns. An un-chocked Win 1200 and a Rem 870 with a nice choke that is very nice with 6-7 1/2 bird shot bringing that pattern down tight.
I have some slugs both regular and rifled as well as 00, #2, #3 and #4.
I know the un-chocked is fine with any load but am guessing the chocked 870 will not do so well with the slugs.
I assume I must remove it to prevent damage or worse but what about the 00-#4??? What is the biggest pellet size recommended for a choke???

Honestly even I think a choke is bad when slugging. I imagine a Elmer Fudd shotgun barrel flowering scenario. 0 -
On a smooth bore shotgun, generally an "Improved cylinder" choke works best to shoot "rifled slugs" out of. 0 -
As far as shot size goes , anything would be fine through a choke . Slugs are best shot from either a smooth or rifled bore , there are rifled slug chokes available . 0 -
You can fire foster slugs through modified and full. However improved cylinder or cylinder bore will yield the best results. People in Shotgun slug for deer only ares have been doing this for years. 0 -
I shoot a 16ga with a modified barrell, my accuracy is paper plate at 75-100 yards with open sights. not bad for my old eyes..... 0 -
My wife has a 870 20ga.,she uses the I/C choke as reccomended by Remington. She shoots rem high velocity rifled slugs. Works very well for her. 0 -
The information you have been given is correct. You can fire FOSTER type rifled slugs, not SABOT's, thru any choke constriction. However, they will generally be more accurate in the Improved Cylinder, or Cylinder Bore choke constrictions.
The shotgun you say has no choke, actually does have a choke, but, it is not removable, like the screw out choke tube on the 870.
One last thing...DO NOT remove the choke tube from the 870 and fire it with no choke tube installed. It WILL RUIN your barrel...permanantly. If you remove the choke tube, it will tell you on the side of it, which constriction it is, Chances are if you only got one tube with the gun(they usually come with 3, unless they are the 870 EXPRESS), it is most likely a modified, or if it is a short barreled turkey gun, an extra full. You need an IC, Cylinder, or SKEET will work also. You can purchase them at most firearm retailer's, and full service gun shops.

You did not say that you had a POLY CHOKE on the barrel! If I were you, I would not shoot ANY slugsa thru that POLY CHOKE!

All these replies are great info
but no gun is predictable.
I have a 12 A5 that was quite
accurate with brenneke slugs thru
a fixed mod choke. I had the barrel cut
down and tapped for chokes.
The shotgun still shoots just as
accurately with the IC or MOD choke
in it.
So to make a long story short,you should
try all your chokes to see how well
each one shoots a slug.
You may be surprised.

Check the box of ammunition you plan on using; most will say acceptable to use up to a full choke.
Sabots can be fired from a non rifled barrel; however they will be less accurate than a fosters or rifle slug.... Because it is never stabolized and just tumbles.0 -

This being post #10 it will be locked so if I have any more concerns I will start a new thread.
The barrel on the 870 does not refer to the choke in any way.
I know the choke is adjustable but I keep it tightened for the tightest pattern.
All of the slugs I have including the 500 rounds coming are regular slugs. None are sabots so I should be good to go.

Even if you open the choke up completely there is still the chance of damaging the poly choke and barrel.0 -
Like said above..Don't take a choke out of a gun and shoot anything in it.
You will be cleaning plastic,burnt powder, and possibly lead out of the threads.
I used a 1978 Wingmaster with a 28" vented rib(fixed mod. choke) to slug hunt with growing up. That gun killed more deer than some men do in their life.
That being said, manufacturers will recomend I.C. to cyclinder bore for rifled slugs. The more open the better they say to use.
In my short time hunting with slug guns(20yrs) modified and open works fine.
My grandpa had a 870 30" full that would slow the slugs down enough to pierce the hide, but not slug penitration.0
