US 1841 (Mississippi rifle ) questions ?
I'm interested in buying an original 1841. What should I be wary of, and what should I expect to get for $2500 - $4000. Specifically in a rifle that old, what can be replaced without wrecking the value. I realize that many had the barrel changed from .54 to .58 during the war, so if it was done at an arsenal what effect would that be on price?

#1, Buy a copy of the latest edition of Flayderman's "Guide to Antique American Firearms".
#2, Locate a competent and honest antique firearms dealer who can help you obtain a authentic Mississippi. If authentic these rifles are over 150 years old. Without a competent dealer helping you, likely you you would get stuck with a reworked/rebuilt turd, IMHO.
When these rifles were sold as surplus after the civil war they had little value. Most were reworked into inexpensive hunting arms for the western expansion. Since they have escalated in value over the last 50 years, many have restored for sale at high prices as original Mississippi's.0 -
