1911 22 conversion kit
I know this has been discussed I did a search and couldn't find it. I have a Springfield GI that I would like a 22 conversion kit for. Any advice on which one?

Hello there are many different choices depending on what you want to do with it . Most all will serve you well to Plink. . The original SERVICE MODEL made by Colt has a floating chamber and was designed as a cheap Ammo replacement for learning how to shoot a 1911 type pistol it has more recoil on purpose then any other unit with out a floating chamber . The Floating chamber must be cleaned and ammo with either plated Copper color bullets or harder lead bullets will shoot better and longer between cleaning . Then there are others that function but group size is fairly large. Then there are three types that lock the barrel to the frame and are capable of match grade groups. The DAY 30X long discontinued but still available if you look long and hard enough. Then the Kart IMHO the best unit ever made for match groups all steel locks the slide back after the last shot. Have not been built for 20+ years but still available on used market. Now we also have the orginial Marval this is a great unit available match grade groups but does not lock back after last shot because of aluminum slide Bob sold the production rights to this unit many Bulls-Eye shooters use these . There have been other units made by Bob Marval but production is hit and miss because of Bob's health. I'm no expert on these, but I do know that the Kimber unit I bought works great and I'm very happy with it. So much so, that the 45 barrel and slide will probably never go back on. It cost me about $300 four years ago. Money well spent. 0 -
I have Kart, Colt, Kimber & Ciener conversion kits. The Kart is by far the best. The Colt floating chamber is good, but requires frequent cleaning. The Kimber is a Ciener with their name stamped on it so they can charge more. As far as Ciener, check this forum for poor customer service. 0 -
You may want to check out the 1911 .22 cal made by GSG. you can get one for around 350.00 and not convert anything on your existing 1911. I have one and feed it a steady diet of mini mags, works flawlessly. Layed it next to my para ordnace and just glancing at it you cant tell the difference. Just a thought. 0 -
If you can find one, Llama use to make a 1911 version 22. It is not full size or very accurate, but it is fine for plinking and great to use to teach children and women with smaller hands to get the general feel of the 1911. As I remember, they were very inexpensive. 0 -
The new Kimber 22kits are NOT built by Ciener. They had so much trouble dealing with him, like everyone has, that they started to build their own. Haven't heard if Ciener is out of jail yet. They feed and shoot very good.
Like any 22lr. you need to find the ammo they like.0 -

As others have said, just get a GSG1911. With the conversions, the cost is about the same, but then you have the mag issues (availability, last round hold open, etc). 0
