    is it correct to assume this percussion lock is for and fits a Springfield Model 1842 Musket? but the 1848 stamped just designates the time of manufacture, and not model no. ?

    The Model 1842 was made until 1855. This lock was made in 1848. However, it's been cut along the top edge, maybe to fit another gun.

    See the unaltered Harper's Ferry lock below (interchangeable with the Springfield lock):

    that is exactly what I thought about the alteration as you described, since it was not broken or fractured, as I first thought, when I come across it at an estate auction Saturday, but closer inspection shows it to be professional altered using a machine or possible hand filed? wonder what they had in mind when they altered this?
