I'm in the market for an AK47. Which makes should I avoid?

  If functional Kalashnikov pattern rifles can literally be built in the equivalent of caves with hand tools, then any "name" manufacturer "ought" to be able to build a working one.
  
  The question, really, is what do you want out of this gun?
  
  If you just want one that goes "Bang" every time, pretty much any of them ought to be OK.
  
  If you want one with excellent fit and finish, straight and properly calibrated sights, nice furniture, etc, then you may have to pay more.
  
  WASR-10 is about as cheap as you can go, and you may run into issues of sight cant or magazine "wobble". . .but you may not. Its gun dependent; some of these guns are better than others.
  
  A better (ie more expensive) brand "should" buy you better quality control, though if you have the ability to test your particular gun thoroughly and return it if its not OK, then maybe this doesn't matter.

  Your best bet is to Google AK-47. There are several websites dedicated to the subjest. They will list all of the information you are looking for and they generally list information on all of the variants.

  Arsenal AK's often have milled receivers and are excellent. I've had especially good luck with all Chinese made Norinco AK's, also the SAR 1's, Egyptians and my favorite AK is one that was made in Hungary. Russians may be the best, but are the hardest to find unless you buy a Russian made Saiga. As has already been noted, most are good to excellent, but some are better than others. You just have to examine each carefully for defects or problems before buying. Shoot it before buying if possible as some have terrible trigger slap. It can be easily cured, but it takes a little time and money for the parts.

  Avoid anything that says IO Inc. (soft receivers, which stretch til the top covers start popping off)
  
  Avoid Hesse, Vulcan, Blackthorne or whatever that hack Robert Hesse is calling his junk dealing crimes against the Gun world these days.
  
  WASRs and GP1975s are the lowest of the low end, save for home-rolled junky looking receivers.
  
  Even the best receiver out there, NODAK, can be buggered to uselessness by some of the "hammer and roll of pennies" AK "builders" out there beating stuff into submission.
  
  Russian isn't the best, not compared to Polish and Hungarian. Egyptian is closest to Russian.

  Go with an Arsenal built AK, and you can't go wrong. Milled or stamped, they are both better than most, even though, I prefer the milled. Stay away from the ones built by Century Arms International(CAI), Hesse, Blackthorne, and Vulcan. This includes the WASR 10. The WASR's usually function OK, but the sights are often canted, and the magazine wells are sloppy.
  
  IF you don't mind a good used one, then look for a SLR-95, or if $$$ is not an obsticle, the PolyTech Legend($2500.00-3000.00, and yes, they ARE THE BEST).
