Krag 30-40 magazine feed issue...

How does the magazine operate on a Krag 30-40?
Is there a spring.

Tried one out and it seemed to not work properly.
Any clues??

  Did a quick youtube search and found this.. A couple comments on it.. It shows you the magazine cut-off located on the left side.. This made it possible to keep your magazine loaded, and fire single shot, manually loaded rounds when only slow fire was needed.. The video doesn't show this,but if you open the bolt when loading the mag a round will be pushed up into chambering position.. This allowed you to be able to fire quickly when the bolt was closed, and you keep your mag full..
