Old Scopes and Old Grease
I have a Blue Ribbon, Beeman's 2X7 A.O. scope. The optics are clear and it works wonderfully on my new bolt action .22.
Only problem is that the grease that lubricates the objective bell has hardened and makes adjustment (25 yards to 75 yards, etc.) very difficult.
I recall reading once that someone advised using a hair dryer to warm and loosen the grease. Is there some easy and inexpensive fix for this problem or should I just "bite the bullet" and send it to a pro for cleaning and re-lubing? If the latter, any recommendations? I think Beeman is out of business and I don't know who made their scopes though I think it's Japanese.

You should be careful with the hairdryer. Hazing in multi-element lens can sometimes be healed this way. If you don't get better advice I would run it out exposing as much thread as I could, a few drops of something like Ballistol right at the coupling, then run the unit all the way in. Perhaps run it in and out a few times. 0 -
I am so glad you posted this question . I have more than 1/2 dozen scopes that have the same problem most are over 25 years old and the variable ring for AO as well as power ring on variable scopes is almost impossible to turn. I have been TEMPED to use my old standby KROIL but worried I might turn a small problem into a Major problem ruining the scope all together. I hope a lot of knowledge is shared. 0 -

What scares me is the idea that one of the "super penetrators" would work it's way through the grease barrier and into the interior of the scope?????? 0 -

"DO NOT USE PENETRATING LUBE OF ANY KIND. WOULD VOID WARRANTY AND PERHAPS RUIN SCOPE. SEND IT BACK TO US."
(I didn't mention that the scope in question wasn't one of theirs.)

Merry Christmas, All! Will try to call the two "scope shops" tomorrow and let you know what I find out.
I went shooting yesterday. Too cold, really. Temps in the teens but my new RAR wouldn't let me stay inside.
Confirmed a couple of things:
1. The RAR shoots like a house afire!, and,
2. AO rings that are hard to turn at 68 degrees are IMPOSSIBLE AT 17!

I actually have two scopes of my own which have the same issues. I am glad to learn that i should NOT use penetrating oil! 0
