Which stock do i have? Rem 700 or 721? how to tell

Well, few weeks ago i traded into a Remington Walnut stock that is very old. has a metal butplate, and a metal silver colored spacer in it as well. There is a spot in the barrel channel that appears the barrel is a little "fat" in one spot, i figure for the rear sight or something. It LOOKS just like it is inletted like the Remington 700 Hogue stock that i have. But someone said it was probably for the 721 or 722, whichever is short action. Anyone know for sure how i can tell?

    I suspect that you indeed have a stock for a 722. The factory barrel has the hump, which the rear sight dovetails to. The first photo below is of a 722, with the original barrel and stock. The second is a top-down view of the barrel channel on a 722 stock, with the wide spot. My 722 (chambered in .222) is identical, and is a short action.

    Notice also the straight bolt handle on the 722. The 700 handle will be curved and the notch in the stock curved accordingly. Also, the thumb safety is different so the cut for it may be different.

    35Wheelen, that is the stock that i have! Thanks for the pics. And the bolt slot is straight, just like Cheechako said.

    Can it be converted to a 700 stock very easily?

    I don't think you'd have much trouble making it fit a 700, but there might be slight differences in the inletting, like Cheechako mentioned. Under the safety of the 722, the top of the stock is cut flat. The same place on a 700 stock is angled down to the rear. Also, the 722 has a solid floorplate, and the dimensions might be slightly different.

    Thanks for your help guys. I'll be listing it on the auction side tonight along with some other stuff i have to get rid of, well, as soon as i find what i did with my camera.......
