I have a contender rifle in .17 Rem. When I fire the cartridge, the rifle is near to impossible to open. The primer is punctured. Can someone shed some light on this. Great little critter getter 0 -

This is a WAG, as I have never had any hands on with the .17 Remington.
They, ( The 17's ) are notorious for badly fouling the bore. If this fouling from the copper bullet jackets isn't removed. It will build up causing very high bore pressures. Resulting in problems similar to the ones you are having.0 -
Im using Remington ammo. i've used the action on a 410 barrel and it performed flawlessly. I was thinking that headspace might have something to with it. 0 -
As weather will permit, i will use a copper cleaner and thoroughly clean the rifling. it was a used barrel and very tickled to have it. thanks again. 0 -

You have gotten great advice from the rest of the crew! Those 17's, and even the 17 HMR, like CLEAN bores. That was especially true for the 17 HMR, and what caused its demise in the semi-auto's. The powder used in it is much more dirty, than most centerfires to boot.
Clean that bore, and inspect the firing pin, to see if it has a sharp edge or burr on it.

As suggested the need to clean the little 17 caliber bore is important. It seems to me the slightly fouled barrel is causing higher chamber pressure which in turn is causing your case to stick & punctured primers.
Unlike bolt action rifles, and semi or lever to a certain extent, the T/C singleshot doesn't have especially great pull when extracting an expended casing. If you remove the forend and watch from the front you'll see the leading edge of the extractor rolls into the frame (pivot pin IIRC) and it is this action that moves the extractor rearward to lift the case. There's a bit of flex in the extractor and space in the channel in which it rides - lots of "give" and that makes sticky cases a pain to extract. On a rimless case you'll often have the extractor ride up and under the case rim. I've found loads that were just fine in a bolt rifle to be a sticky PITA in the Encore/Contender line.0 -
put a small rubber or cork in the chamber and then fill bore with Kroil then let stand for 48 hours and then clean. Kroil will get BETWEEN fouling and Base metal of barrel And Let you clean the bore without ETCHING the barrel metal. You do need a 17 Caliber cleaning rod 0
