1960 colt python
anyone have an idea of price on a average condition python,light scratches in finish, 4" nickle, original wood grips, no box or papers, s/n puts gun being made in 1960 thanks

Check the actual selling prices on the net auctions, for Fair Market Value. You will have to have a account on GunBroker, to see the completed auctions.
Factory originality would be most important as far as value is concerned. Are you sure the Nickle is factory?
Guns described as being in average condition, are hard to price without quality photos. Whats average to you, might be a POS to a guy looking for a Python. Just saying.0 -
was more wondering if being made in 1960 gave it any more value than say one made in the late 70's or 80's 0 -
Average condition shooter, (WAG) $1250 - 1750.
A Python of that vintage should have a matte nickel plated rear sight. Later on, the rear sights were black. If it has been shot alot since it was made, especially with magnum rounds, be sure to check the timing, they will go out of time and it takes the right gunsmith to make it work like factory again.
Nickel is frequently misspelled. When I do searches with that word I use both spellings.....makes a difference.0 -

With all due respect, what does the minor change in the design of the crane on all E-/I-frame Colts have to do with the price of the 1960 Python about which 44mutley inquires?
44mutley, YES, assuming the condition is the same, being made in 1960 gives a Python a LOT more market value than one made in the late 1970s or 1980s.
For what it is worth, the Python was not cataloged in nickel finish until the March 1961 catalog. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that a 1960 Python would have an original nickel factory finish. Since Pythons were often shipped out of serial number sequence, it would be worth investing in an historical letter to learn the original finish.
Doesn't anyone (besides mrs102 and me) know how to spell "nickel?" [:D]

am planning on sending in for a factory letter, my nickel python i was asking about is made in late 1960,
s/n 129xx and from what i was told the 1961's started in 131000 -
I'm not positive on this, so you may want to check for yourself, but it seems to me like 4 inch Pythons weren't offered until 1961. 0 -

The "Police Python" with its 4-inch barrel was introduced in 1960. I have one that letters as shipped in 1960. 1960 was also the last year for the full-checkered stocks.0
