Serial number help please
I have a Hawes western marshal .44mag the serial number appears to end in /4. I remember when I bought it (used no box) the dealer said the slash was a 1. I just bought a Hawes Texas Marshal at the guns show yesterday, also .44 mag and the serial number also end in what appears to be /4. for the background check it was also entered as a 1. This seems like too much of a coincidence especially since the western marshal is much older (4 digits before the slash as opposed to 5 on the Texas) makes me wonder if this is some kind of inventory notation or maybe a month of manufacture or caliber notation? It is hard to find info on these guns so any help is appreciated. also if there is a way to determine date of manufacture by serial number I would be interested to find that out too.

They were made in what was then West Germany, for Hawes. Probably date to the 70's. Sauer made them for Hawes, so they are descent quality guns. They will have West German Proof Marks, one of which will be a proof date. Either post quality photos of the Proof Marks. Or a very detailed, specific description of them.

Got this photo off the net showing the German Proof Marks on the barrel of a Hawes. The date is hard to make out? It might be "80"?

I only see one mark, the same on both guns. It is right after the serial number on the left side of the barrel and it is a circle with a triangle inside of it, each line that makes up a side of the triangle extends beyond the point and curls back to form an open circle. I cannot get a good picture of it as it is very small and my photo equipment sucks. I do not see a proof date anywhere.They do also say J.P. Sauer and Sohn, made in western Germany on the left of the barrel, Hawes Firearms Co los angeles California on the right side of the frame and the model and caliber on the right side of the barrel but all of that is pretty standard. I have owned a few of these over the years and always had good experiences with the way the perform. 0 -
Here is what the West German Proof Marks look like. You can just make out the number 74 inside the shield. That's the date of proof. The shield with the crosshatching next to it is the identifying mark of the Munich proof facility. Yours will have a proof mark that looks like a leaf, where the Sauer guns were proofed. 0 -

That's the old Sauer Trade Mark, don't recall seeing it on their recently made guns.0 -
I have a Hawes Western Marshall in .44 Mag, Serial number is 4/409 and another Hawes Western Marshall with a SN of 1828/5. Both of them, at different dealers in different states, were listed on the receipt as a '7'.
Both of them are JP Saur & Sohn imported by Hawes and both have 1968 dates.
