Remington 7400 issue

I recently purchased a Remington 7400 and discovered the end of the gas tube (port?) is marred. Looks like a previous owner let the action bar assembly hit the tube during cleaning or dis-assembly.

I haven't shot the rifle yet, but am concerned it's not going to function properly because of this. I've read that the rifle's function can be affected by this sort of damage to the tube. Unfortunately, the tube, block, and barrel are all one assembly, so this isn't a part that can just be replaced, and I don't want to have to buy a new barrel assembly.

Is this something which can be repaired, and if so, does anyone know a good shop for this sort of work? It's beyond my skill set. Any help would be appreciated.

    No doubt it makes sense to shoot it. I'm waiting for a replacement ejector port cover to arrive so I can replace the broken one I removed. Hopefully I'll get that in time to try it out this weekend. In the meantime I just thought I'd do some research as I suspect it may be a problem from what I've read. With luck, maybe it won't.

    you do understand you will have to remove the barrel to install the dust cover. it require a special tool. no.. a crescent will not work.also, the port can be cured with the correct size drill bit turned by hand.

    I removed the operating handle to take the old one off, seemed to me you could put the new one on without removing the bolt, but if so, I have the tool to take the barrel off. Hoping I won't need to. Guess I'll find out soon enough.

    "you do understand you will have to remove the barrel to install the dust cover."...............NOT SO, the e.p. cover is plastic and can be installed without barrel removal if it reasonbly warm once the operating handle is removed. as to the gas tube...shoot it first, I've seen several like this and they all worked ok.

    Mike-thanks for the info. I got the old one off by removing the bolt handle (a royal PITA to get the pin knocked out though) and looked to me like the new one would go on easy enough with no further dis-assembly. I hope so. I have the tool to remove the barrel nut, but would prefer to leave it as is. I hope it's as you say and shoots just fine. I like the rifle a lot, I'll like it even more if it actually WORKS. Got a good deal on it, so took a bit of a chance. Should have the EP cover tomorrow and will put that back on and try my luck this weekend.

    yes, they can be a pain. remember the pin that holds the cocking handle is splined. now, if your rifle came into my shop... i WOULD remove the barrel. why, because you can use your hawkeye to inspect the chamber for the small pits from improper care and cleaning and clean the barrel from the breach end without damage to the crown.also, you can remove the bolt and action bars for proper cleaning of the inside of the receiver. removing a barrel of of a 740/742/7400 type may take up to 6 minutes. why not just do it right.

    Thanks all for your inputs. I took the rifle out today, and it functioned perfectly. Now I just need to get a scope on it and it's ready to go.
