Steyr in 338 Federal

I have a Steyr in 338 Federal (short action) and ammo is getting harder and harder to find.
Is it possible to re-chamber/re-barrel my Steyr to another caliber that has more of a following and would it be cost effective to have the rifle altered.If so, what are my best options caliber wise.

  Anything based on a 308 Winchester case should work. Have you considered loading for it?
  
  I like the 7mm08. Likely not cost effective to re-barrel. I think you would be better off selling and getting a different rifle.

  This will depend on which model Steyr you have.
  
  The Pro Hunter models have barrels which are pressed in and require the rifle to be returned to the factory for replacement. This is extremely expensive as you might suspect.
  
  Some of the other models have owner replaceable barrels but the barrels are very expensive due to the design of the tenon/chamber area which encloses the bolt lugs.
  
  If your local shops don't stock this cartridge, it might be easier to give them a list of the brands and bullet weights you want and have them order it in. Otherwise, just find the cartridge selection desired online and order it yourself.

  Thanks for the info. I was surprised at the limited number of 338 ammo for sale on the auction side but with the links given, I can feed my Steyr with no problem now.
  
  Some (most) would argue that the 338 is a solution to a problem that didn't exist but I bought it new on the auction side at good price and I've really gotten attached to it.

  I have the Tikka in 338 Federal like you the round has become one of my favorites
