.22 Magnum rifles

I am in the market for a 22 mag and have not kept up with reviews of what is available.

I prefer this gun to be either Lever, Pump or Semi Auto and not a bolt action. Good accuracy out to 75-100 yards is what I need.

I see rifles from Rem., Win., Savage, Henery and Ruger and don't have a particular preference but I do want a reliable shooter that I can scope and keep handy for varmints that my .22 LRs are not up to. New or used in excellent shape will do fine and no need for fancy stocks as this rifle will be used in some harsh conditions on my ATV and in all sorts of weather.

Interested in hearing about guns to avoid and ones that are tried and true to search for.

    Lever? The Ruger 96/22 (no longer made), Marlin 57m (nlm), Henry, or Winchester.

    Semi auto? HK300 or Brno. May be able to find a Kodiak (a LGS has one, there were 2 on auction last week) which was the first semi auto 22wmr and tube fed.

    Personally my Savage 93 rocked, and would shoot MOA at 100 yards, but it is a bolt gun....

    Haven't seen any ammo lately. A buddy has an auto-loading pistol that functions fine with the older heavy bullet loads not the new hyper-velocity stuff.

    I like my Henry .22 mag. It wasn't too expensive, and shoots very well.


    It is the lever model. I have a soft spot for lever action rifles.....

    Thanks Riomouse911. Funny coincidence here, I live right near the Rio reservoir here in NY. Is your Henry the lever or pump model?

    I have a Ruger 10-22 in .22 Mag I got here on GB. They are a little pricey but mine shoots good.

    That is good to hear Lefty! My favorite gun is a 10/22 in 22LR that I have dialed in with a nice target barrel and Butler Creek stock with a folding bipod in it. If I could get the knock down power out of it I would not be looking for another gun. Even a 22 Mag is light on power for the Coyotes I have in my sights. I am leaning toward either a SA or Pump gun for this one.

    I haven't heard real good things about the Remington 597. IMO a 9422M would be hard to beat. There seems to be quite a few on the auction side and the used ones, like what you're looking for seem to go reasonable. Good luck.

    You might also look for the Volquartsen, and Magnum Research 22 WMR's that are based on the 10-22. The Volquartsen is supposed to be the top end of the semi-auto's here stateside.

    I have two bolt actions...an Anschutz Woodchucker, made on the 64 avtion, and a Ruger 77/22 varmint. The Ruger has been worked over by my favorate gunsmith(me), and will put 3 shots in the end of a pencil eraser at 100 yards, with no wind.

    I also have a CZ-453 that is in 17HMR, and a 452 in 22LR...they are both extremely accurate, and among the very best deal in the bolt actions.

    Gary, I have to ask, is there a particular reason you want a 22mag and not a 223. Right now you can find the 223 ammo just about anywhere and it would have the knock down you need. 22 mag ammo has been non existent around here.

    I have a few 22 Magnums, bought them in part because there are times I want a little more than a 22 lr but don't feel like reloading.

    The Henry is a neat little 22 Magnum, although the "spray paint" finished receiver and plastic parts here & there are something I don't like. But it's accurate and reliable - nice wood too. I think most would say the Winchester 9422M is a better rifle.

    I picked up a Magnum Research and it's been a great semi auto rifle. Reliable (with Ruger mags) and very accurate. I actually bought it used cheap as heck (under $300.00) in 17 HMR - of course most 17 HMR semi rifles developed a reputation for rupturing brass and this one was no exception. I sent it to Magnum Research for a new barrel and they covered all costs.

    I've not owned one but the CZ and older PRNO are supposed to be very good semi 22 magnums. Especially the older BRNO, I keep "almost buying" one but haven't quite gotten around to it.
