Winchester model 1906 "serial posted"
I have someone wanting to sell me one, It is a .22 short only with the smooth forearm and all looks correct until he tells me its a factory smoothbore, I can find no information on such an animal, did Winchester make any 22short smoothbore 1906 models?
I asked if the barrel says smoothbore and it does not

Be careful! Factory smoothbore Winchesters do exist. Playing the odds (roughly maybe a handful of original smoothbore rifles out of what, 800,000 standard rifled barrels?), it is NOT a factory smoothbore.
Also, to the best of my knowledge Winchester only loaded .22 Long shot cartridges in that era.
Most early 1906 barrels look like a sewer pipe inside. Maybe he can't see rifling??0 -
Im thinking that someone is blowing a bit of smoke up your backside. If it were a factory smoothbore, it would not be a 22 short. I might be wrond, but Bert H will be along soon, with the low down on this.

That's pretty much what I was thinking, I know some smoothbores out there but I have never heard of it in a 22 short only gun, Burt or someone may correct this but to my knowledge the 22 short only model 1906 was only made 2years and I have never even seen a .22 short shot shell 0 -
Winchester never officially offered the Model 1906 (06) with a "Shot Only" barrel. Within the Winchester .22 caliber slide-action rifle series, the Models 61 and 62A are the most commonly encountered with smooth bore barrels.
What is the serial number on the rifle in question? I will presume that it has the early style locking lugs on the bolt?0 -
Bert,,I do not have gun in hand yet, I emailed back and asked for serial numbers but have not received reply yet. This gentleman is an acquaintance of a friend that knows I collect some older firearms and he gave him my email, he told me if interested he would me this weekend and I wanted a little knowledge before that, as of right now all I have is this picture and him saying it a factory 22 short smoothbore, I honestly figure the rifling is just gone from corrosion , buy hey, you never know, He is asking $400 and I may decide to buy it at that price anyway

That makes it an April 1906 production 22 Short only rifle. 99.9% that the bore is simply shot/corroded out.0 -
Thank you sir, 0 -
sharpshooter039,
The bore could also be severely leaded, too. A hands-on inspection, then a really good cleaning need to be done.
