Questions for Bert 1894 # 262XXX
I have come into possession of an 1894 Carbine with the above S/N . I'm 99.9% certain that the barrel has been replaced . I'm wondering how Winchester handled guns that went back to them for barrels .The barrel appears to have maybe been a barrel made in the 40s . The reason I think this , is because it has a flat barrel band , and Model 94 is stamped on the barrel , along with 30 WCF . Would Winchester have replaced the barrel using these parts , if the gun had been sent to them for a new barrel , back in the later 40s ? This gun has a shotgun butt and the long fore end . According to what I could glean from your numbers posted here , it was manufactured in 1905 . This gun is in very good condition , except for being drilled and tapped for a couple of different receiver sights ! Lots of bluing , with the Winchester patina , and not one buggered screw on it . It appears to have spent a good deal of it's life with someone who took very good care of it , as the wood is very nice for a 109 year old rifle , no cracks or gouges , just honest wear from use . The bore is excellent ,with strong rifling . I'm wondering if it would have any collector value , if the barrel was a factory replacement (how would I tell) . The partial serial number indicates that it is a 1905 vintage gun.
The Flat-band Carbines were all manufactured in 1946- 1948. If the barrel is from that same era, it will have a 2-digit year number stamped on it right next to the receiver frame (in the concave section of the barrel). The barrel should also be marked "PROOF STEEL" versus "NICKEL STEEL".
Which specific type of butt plate does it have?
The drilled & tapped holes for receiver sights have destroyed the collector value, and the replacement barrel even if done by the factory, does not help it either.
