thread my SKS barrel?

I have a Chinese paratrooper SKS. I took off the front sight and want to thread the barrel so I can put on a flash hider. Barrel diameter is .558 in. Inside diameter of already threaded flash hider is .505 in with M14x1 RH threads. I have to thread the barrel by hand since I have no high tech equipment. I know this can be done properly.

My question is, can I purchase a die with M14x1 RH threads and thread the .558 in barrel and will the .505 in flash hider then fit and screw on? As you can tell I don't know much about this but will appreciate any good advice on it.

Just FYI, I have a Yugo SKS and my flash hider fits it. I just had to remove the grenade launcher and used the exposed threads. The diameter of which is .544 in. if that helps any.

    It seems to me that their will have to be some material removed from the OD of the Chinese barrel.

    Per your measurement of the Yugo barrel. The OD of the male threads is .544. Chinese barrel is .558 OD.

    IMHO, it would be best to take it in to a competent gunsmith, with proper equipment and knowledge. To have it turned down concentrically, and the treads cut with a single point tool bit.

    I treaded two Sks rifles and used the left hand die and Ak style hider.

    Your barrel will need to be turned down and buy a Die to the threads you need.
    For a 1 time project not worth buying a die, last time i looked they are around $50 and then the cost of reducing diameter of barrel.
    Most shops get $75 to turn and thread.

    Some things you do yourself. . .some things you leave to the experienced pros. This is probably one of the ones you leave to the pros.

    As already mentioned, I think by the time you add up the cost of the necessary tools, plus your time, plus your learning curve and the reasl chance you'll screw something up, its probably just worth it to have a gunsmith do this for you.

    Beantown, excellent advice and also probably the closest suggestion yet regarding a flash hider/compensator addition for minimum effort and cost. I am going to try and make your advice work. Only problem is that my Chinese SKS is a paratrooper with a 16 & 1/2 barrel and the only things on the end of the barrel was (now gone) the front sight and then the gas block. There is no bayonet parts for me to attach the choate compensator.

    What if I purchased the compensator, dermal off the nub holding the bolt and nut that is part of the new compensator, slip the compensator on (see if it fits well first) and then either silver solder or pin on the compensator? The is an existing notch near the end of the barrel so maybe I could drill a matching hole in the new compensator and pin it. Any comments?

    Hey Larry, this is Tyler from CNC Warrior. You are indeed correct. You can use the M14x1 RH die to thread your Chinese SKS barrel to accept the same attachments as your Yugo. As for advice be very careful, you may even want to have a gunsmith perform the operation. If not, be sure to remain perpendicular to the barrel, move slowly, and go back over your threads.     I could maybe do that since I would be the one adding new thread on a plain barrel. It would make no difference to me whether I was adding a LH or RH thread and long as everything fit. Only worry is that the diameter of my flash hider or even an AK style hider would not fit my SKS barrel without it being turned down some. Present barrel diameter is .558 starting at the end of the barrel, then if you go back about 1 inch the barrel steps up to a OD of .633 in

    Might be cheaper/easier/safer to drill out the hole in the muzzle device and just thread the barrel as opposed to turning it down and threading. New muzzle device much cheaper than a new SKS para barrel.

    I did not have to do anything to the end of the barrel except get the die I have started and thread the barrel. I purchased the die years ago and it was advertised to thread barrels for hiders. The die cam with a handle which was much larger than anything I had and was easyer to hold steady while starting the threads.
