Is the .308 a good hunting rifle? what types of game are harvested with it?

    I have been offered two guns in .308 but can only afford one of them. They are a Remington 788 and a Remington 600. They are from different sources. The 788 has an older scope on it, and is in 98% condition. I won't see the 600 until Wednesday evening. I know nothing about the "reputation" of either model. I'd appreciate any information anyone could provide.

    788's have a good reputation as shooter's. There was trigger recall on the 600's, I'd make sure it has the replacement unit if you plan to shoot it.

    There was a trigger recall on the 700's too, and 720, 721, and 722's all because of litigation.

    If it were my choice, and the 600 was in great shape, that is the one I would be going with.

    It was the sucscessor of the 700, actually. They are what a light, strong, accurate short action should be. They are common, but not that common...something that not everyone has.

    There are those who like the 788, too, and I am one of them also. The 788, is one of the most accurate buget based rifles of its time. It is now a saught after item in some chamberings, if in good condition. The 788 was the budget based model, that was offered as a lesser rifle, to the flagship 700. Truth be known, the 788 would match, or better the 700 in accuracy, at a price of about half...so Big Green said good bye to it.

    I would grab the 600 if it's in decent shape.

    The 600 came out a few years after the 700. It is basically the same action as the 700 and has modifications similar to the XP100- bolt handle turned forward to avoid the knob hitting the shooters hand during recoil. The differences between the 600 and 700 are cosmetic, with the goal of lightening the rifle.

    the 788 is an entirely different action. The most apparent difference is the 788 has rear locking lugs, which in other guns had proven to be susceptible to bolt compression and increased headspace. I am not aware of any 788s developing this condition, but a lot of metallurgy advancements occurred prior to the 788.

    Either rifle sounds like a suitable purchase, personally I would lean toward the 600.

    The 788 was available (at different times) as a 22" barreled rifle, and an 18" barreled carbine; the 600 came only as a carbine.

    There were some 788s known to break-off bolt handles.

    This is a Mary Ann or Ginger question. 788 is accurate, with a nice detachable magazine. 600 is smoother, front locking, but stubby barrel.

    788 .308" KICK. Never fired a 600 .308....

    I have a 788 in 308. It is amazingly accurate. I got it third hand and it was well broken in. It has a 22" barrel and is 300 yard gun, easily. No noticeable problems with either trigger or bolt. Magazines are pricey, but for hunting only a couple are needed anyway.

    As I remember, the 600s came in a 18.5" barrel, so I would imagine that the muzzle blast, recoil and overall discomfort level would be significant. The 600s were suppose to be a "brush" gun, so I could understand the chambering in the 35 Rem. mag, but in the smaller and faster cartridges like the 308 or 243 it didn't make much sense to me. Funny thing, the 788 did come in 30-30.

    If you are going to reload, the 600 is the choice as the 788 has rear locking lugs and a reputation for stretching brass. The trade-off is that the 788 is reputed to be a very accurate out-of-the-box rifle with off-the-shelf ammo, just find the load it likes. There is more aftermarket stuff available for the 600 due to its commonality with the 700 series, parts are also easier to find. You have a lot of good info here, weigh it against your needs and wants and make your choice.

    Way back when, the 788 was the "economy" rifle and sold for about $100. The 600 was considerably more expensive but was a little distasteful with that plastic rib and floor plate. The 600 was the parent of the Model 7 NOT the 700.
