Old Sword Help (Pictures)
A friend of mines mother received this from her father and we are trying to find out something about it. It is 36 1/2 inches with the scabbard overall, 35 1/2" without the scabbard. The blade is 30 inches long. The blade is marked Boston Regalia Co. Boston Mass. The blade s very ornate with US on it. Can anyone tell me anything about it and what it might be worth?

It appears to be a US Model 1860 Staff & Field Officer's sword. If you Google that, you should find plenty of information. 0 -
Do NOT try to clean in any way.It will REDUCE it's value 0 -
If you can run down the "history" of the sword (where did "father" get it??) that will significantly add to the value....particularly if it belong to someone in the Civil War or beyond. As PS says, don't touch it with any type of "cleaning" as you will significantly damage it for value purposes. So...suggest you get to work doing some research on it to improve your position. 0 -
Got this off the net. Using "Boston Regalia Co.", as the search term.
From this data it appears the sword is no earlier than 1890's.
"July, 1890, Mr. Leighton (1866) organized the Boston Regalia Company, of which he is president, and began the manufacture and sale of military and societal regalia and theatrical goods, etc, corner of Temple Place and Tremont Street."0 -
This mystery Gets more interesting > RUFE SNOW is a well respected Member Here and I can't ever remember him EVER being Wrong. However in this case I would have to ask him this question.Is it possible this is an orginial piece that The prop company bought and lightly marked as OWNED by them. [?] The reason I ask is Most Prop items are not shown in CLOSE UP And are cheaply made. This item With the etched Blade LOOKS to be high quality. Not a Stage or film made up piece. the markings BOSTON Regalia Company don't look stamped but rather very lightly marked.

Don't have a clue? Got the data off the net regarding the company in question. The markings on the sword blade look etched to me. I personally don't know enough about swords. To even guess at it's age.0 -
The blade appears to be straight; that and the shape of the guard, the scabbard, its tip and the attachment points for the belt look very much like my US Navy Officer's sword. That's what it looks like to me.
If I remember correctly, for the proper length the tip should be level with the corner of the eye when at attention.0
