hello, can anyone tell me the DOM for a marlin 1893 lever rifle in 30-30 cal. serial # 440196. thanks for any help.

  I have a Marlin 1893 lever action, octagonal barrel originally chambered in 38-40 with serial number 388741 and the best I have been able to come up with based on other peoples SN's and dates is that it left the factory sometime in 1909. My SWAG would be yours would be around 1912.
  
  My research determined that there is no definitive record system for Marlins of that time frame.

  I have a Marlin 1893 lever action, octagonal barrel originally chambered in 38-40 ............do you mean .38/55? the 1893 was never made in .38/40

  My bad, I typed '38 40' instead of '32 40', It has '32 40' stamped on the top flat of the octagonal barrel but the '32 40' has an 'X' stamped through it and farther down the barrel is stamped ".32". I have shot .32 Winchester Special in it which is what I was told the .32 meant when I bought it. Probably why I didn't catch my error regarding the original caliber.
  The barrel has been drilled and tapped for a long scope and there is an extra hole on the side of the receiver which I think were for an old style micrometer sight. The tang is also drilled and tapped for a tang sight.
  I've also been told the .32 stamped on it means .32 HP but, as I said, it shoots .32 Win Specials. The barrel is definitely a Marlin 1893.
  Didn't mean to hijack the OP's thread, just needed to clarify the caliber and remark on how impressed I am with the knowledge and insight one gets from all the experts on here. Good Eye, Mike, and appreciate catching my error.

  " Good Eye, Mike, and appreciate catching my error."..........no 'slight' intended, your rifle was originaly a .32/40 and then (appairently)rechambered to .32 special. probably for easyer to find ammo.
