Colt Python
How can you tell a nickle finish from an ultimate stainless finish? The bluebook lists both and I don't know which one I have. Also how can you tell the year it was made by the serial no.? Does the serial no. give any other info about the gun?

I have a Colt Python polished SS with a 8" barrel. The gun is NIB. all paper work, carrying case, the cylinder has never been rotated. I bought the gun in 1993. gun serial number is PY3985 My question is, what's it worth? Thanks, I appreciate any help...[:D] 0 -
If you paid big bucks for the Python, better hope that the finish is Colt factory original.

I hope that the Colt letter will verify that the finish is factory original.
Funny things happen though. Last year I bought a U.S. made Browning Challenger II pistol. It was mat nickel plated with a 4 3/8 barrel. I was convinced that it was a unique one of a kind pistol.
Unfortunately when I was able to contact the Browning historian in Utah. He checked the records and told me it had left the factory as as standard blued Challenger II, with a 6" barrel. To rub it in he told me Browning never made any Nickel plated short barreled Challenger II's.0 -
Could it be the Bright Stainless Steel finish? My friend has one and it's very bright, almost like chrome. 0 -
One of my Pythons is the "Ultimate" with 6" barrel. This finish is a polished stainless steel and looks like nickel. If you think your 8 incher is stainless, rub a little mag polish on a small hidden area under the grips. If the rag turns black, its stainless.
Maybe this will help. The top gun is my Python Ultimate AKA Polished stainless. The other two are nickel. If you viewed the Ultimate alone it would look like nickel, but viewed with the others you can tell its not nickel.

I had one with a brushed stainless finish and I remember people were more interested in the polished stainless finished pythons. The polished ones did look a lot better than the brushed ones. This was around 2000 time frame. Anyway, the python didn't live up to my expectations and apparently not the seller's either, so I traded it off for a Zeiss scope. Still have the Zeiss scope. 0 -

I have $950 in this Python, DO YOU think that I got RIPPED OFF?
All of the info on the Python Target is this, they were all MFG. in 1981, with only 2 finishes MFG. Blue and Brite Nickel, this Python is neither finish. I am not a beginner on finishes, the gun I am sure is regular STAINLESS, not Brite STAINLESS, and I am sure it is not Coltguard, Electroless Nickel, or Satin Nickel. My gut feeling it is a Custom ordered Target MFG. in the Colt Custom Shop. I will find out what finish the gun left Colt with, I am getting a Colt Archives Letter on this gun.0 -
As far as I know, the Python Target was made only in blue or bright nickel, never stainless or electroless nickel. I suspect the gun has been refinished, but only a factory letter will confirm. 0 -
As speculation, it may be a finish done by Magnaport called Magnalife. It looks like stainless and around then, it was a popular finish. Superhard and a flat stainless appearance. 0
