hi-standard mag question
hello, I have a hi-standard magazine for an olympic model 22 short that appears to be stainless. was told that they never made one in stainless but the man says that mine was cadmium plated then cleaned and said that the plating on them always flacked off anyway? when I got it, it seemed to be aluminum other than being super heavy. I hit it will steel wool and it polished right up. thing is that this mag is not in the white! its either still coated or stainless and its clear that the floorplate and side button is stainless. I just need to list it correctly, any thoughts? thanks

Post quality photos would be the best thing to do.
H-S did make cad plated mags in the 50's, for a short time.
Many other aftermarket manufacturers also have made mags, for the various H-S pistols. Without quality photos, no way for us to pin it down for you.

The High standard 22 Short magazines were made 2 different ways one early model GO was curved Then later ones either Blued or Plated Straight but all were non standard compared to the Long rifle magazines. A True short magazine will not even allow Long rifle shells to be loaded.into the magazine . I have never personally seen a Short magazine that was not original equipment. 0 -
its short only and original. man that informed me thinks there is no way that its the original finish cause it always flaked off? ive tried over and over to post pics unsuccsssfully. 0 -
I have a cadmium plated HS mag. It has a frosty dull silver appearance. 0 -
yes rufe-snow, that's it and Charlie it did look like that until I hit it with 0000 steel wool. so good, im assuming mine still has all the plating. thanks guys 0 -
High Standard made cadmium plated magazines in both .22 LR and .22 short from about February 1954 (S/N 446,700) through about August 1959 ( S/N 980,000). This would include the most of the 100 series, 101 series and the first 18 months of the 102 series.
On some the finish comes off and other it doesn't.
The problem with these cadmium plated magazines is that some were not well rinsed after plating leaving plating salts between the inner and outer shells. Over time this leads to corrosion and in severe cases the rust builds to sufficient to distorts the shells so the magazine will not load and or not insert into the magazine well or both.
High Standard never made or used stainless steel magazines.0
