22 rifle ??

If you were going to buy a 22 rifle either new or used that would be used mostly in temp. from 0 f down to maybe -40F what would you buy. It would need to work all the time every time. I am well aware of the proper care of weapons in extreme cold so that would always be a given with me. Just need some ideas on what gun. Thanks

    Back in 72 or 73 I was rabbit hunting around Christmas in -25 or less. I had a well used Nylon 66. It would cycle so slowly I could watch the bolt work. That rifle never jammed. I have a 121 Remington that I would trust and Erma German Trainer single shot.

    Bolt action would be first choice, second would be a lever action.

    Ruger 1022 or a Ruger 7722, just my brand preference on readily available 22lr rifles. I would think that a properly lubed, or lack of lube semi would be just as reliable as a bolt.

    Get a pump action.
    I have an old 550-1 Remington auto that just keeps running like the energizer bunny never jams and I've seen them with actions dirty as heck and still operate, BUT I would not trust a auto of any kind in those temps.

    I've got a old 22 caliber Remington pump, don't remember the model has grooves for scopes and has never jammed.

    The Metis trappers around here used single shot bolt action .22's and they only used kerosene to occasionally 'oil' them. Or if they could afford one they had a Browning semi-auto.

    I have had great results with a rem 580 single shot that only thing I keep on firing pin is powdered graphite. I just take bold apart an degrease an the coat with graphite an never had a problem been trapping in below zero weather for years. after season I just re oil. as for bore I just clean an re clean then just a light coating of hoppies 9

    A good semi-auto should still run fine in cold temps. But even aside from the temperature question, I don't think any semiauto is going to be as reliable as a good bolt gun.

    If the question is max reliability, I my preference would also be a bolt-action and I'd be looking for one specifically with synthetic furniture and stainless steel, both to mitigate effects of temperature cycling (eg moisture condensation on gun when you bring it into room temp from below freezing, thermal expansion/contraction, etc).

    I'll add that when you're dealing with extreme weather, how you maintain the gun becomes more important. You need to keep it clean, and avoid any lubes that can congeal in cold temps.

    Edit: Oh yeah. . .one other thing. Make sure whatever gun you get, is operable with gloves on, because pretty likely that's how you're going to have to do it!

    581 or 582 Remington. Light, accurate, crisp trigger pull and it shoots every time. 581 detachable magazine, 582 tube fed - depending on the number of shots you need. JMHO

    I bought a Henry lever and I havent used it in minus 45 temps, but Id be surprised if it wouldnt work as good or better than any other rifle.
