Pre war model 70
I have a pre-war model 70 with a 5 digit serial number.. It was never tapped for a scope mount in the rear.. Does anyone know if they make a mount that fits in the holes that are tapped in the side of the receiver?? It has the 2 holes tapped at the front but nothing except the 2 holes on the side of the receiver at the rear??

Not recently.
In olden times there was a Stith scope mount that attached the front base to the D&T holes on top of the receiver ring and the rear base to the D&T holes on the side of the bridge, meant for a peep sight.
Then you need Stith rings.

In Nick Stroebel's book, "Old Rifle Scopes". There is a small section on the mounts made by the, M.L. Stith Co., of San Antonio Texas. They date to the early 50's. And enable scopes to be mounted, without additional holes being drilled in the receiver. This one was known as the, "Streamline" or "Install-It-Yourself- Mount".
At this late date, your best bet might be fleabay or one of the specialist dealers of vintage scopes and sights.0 -
Bausch & Lomb made a base set that attaches that way. The bases are adjustable for W & E since they were made for non-adjustable scopes but your Redfield would probably work with them. The B&L's seem to be more available than the Stith. In their day, the B&L scopes and mounts were considered to be at or near top of the line. A lot of the old model 70's were set up with them--I have several myself. Expect to pay $25-$35 for a base set and the same for a set of rings. 0 -
Just to add to the good advice given here,make sure your rings are compatible with your scope's tube diameter. Don't know what your old Redfield is, but although Stith made some 1" rings late in their history, most are 3/4". I had one on a pre-war mod 70 and took it off because I found the scope made operating the pre-war safety (which moves from the rear position to the left)cumbersome. That situation is made worse with a 1" tube. Seems that you know not to drill the rear bridge. It's a downgrade to collector value. 0 -
You could use a Weaver extended front base, and install a single ring red dot sight like the Aimpoint C3. S40 0 -
Crotchy, I have a 1936 issue model 70 30 gov't 06. I found a set of Lyman target bases, one for the front receiver ring, one for the rear sight dovetail. I put a Lyman 8x Junior Targetspot on it.
Looks great, is contemporary to the rifle, and works pretty well. Best of all, it doesn't look like every other scoped bolt action rifle.0 -
I have a bunch of B&L Adjusto bases, some are for the M70. A few are for a side of the receiver screws- but I don't recall if they were for the M70. If you're interested send an e-mail and I'll check the parts box. 0
