32 smith & wesson cartridge question

if an older h&r or iver johnson is being sold as a "32 s&w" should it be cosidered s long or short ?

  I would lean toward it being a short however I'm sure they were also made in longs maybe not by ij or h&r.

  Measure the length of the cylinder. If it's less then 1 1/4" or 1.250. It's chambered for the 32 S & W.
  
  The only reason that the manufacturers would use a longer cylinder. Is if for some reason they had specific orders for revolvers chambered for the 32 S & W, only. Not likely though, IMHO.

  If the cylinder is bored through it'll take either.
  Not to worry, chamber pressure is the same for both.

  .32 S&W Long Iver Johnson models, and I think H&Rs also, were 6-shot and made on the .38 size large frame.
  
  The 5-shot models were smaller frame and for the regular .32 S&W rounds.
