winchester model 70
I just purchased a used winchester model 70 xtr sporter magnum in 7mm remington magnum and on the opposite side of these markings on the barrel is the word featherweight,the barrel is 24"long and is clean {no open sights]non of my other xtr sporters have this.The markings are crisp and bright and match the other rifles.any ideas?

I purchased a winchester model 70 with a Lyman Alaskan 2.5 power scope for $100.00 from a former "Tuskeegee Airman" whom I will not name. Upon tracing the serial number through a friend we discovered that it was made in 1947.According to him,"I shot a moose with it in 1955 and it's been in the closet ever since".The rifle has been appraised. Would obtaining a letter or bill of sale with his signature on it increase the value of the rifle? 0 -
You might want to post in the wanted section. I think a 22-250 bolt face is the same as a 257 Roberts. A 223 Rem is different bolt face.

Good chance that a different bolt and barrel will not just drop in and work in your action without some gun smithing.
I'd look at aftermarket barrels with a twist rate and rifling style you want.0 -
It would make more economic sense to sell your existing rifle and then buy one in .257. 0 -
Thankyou charliemeyer007, I have changed to wanted ad. I will check to see if a 257 will fit bolt face. If this is the case, all I would need is a 257 barrel and some gunsmithing. Thanks again - Bert 0 -
What with the cost of the barrel and the gunsmithing to fit the new barrel it might be more effective to just get a different gun.

If your bolt is for a 22-250, you won't need to get a new bolt. If it is for a .223 you will.

FWIW, getting a new bolt and barrel is going to be less expensive than finding a new .257 Roberts in a Winchester rifle. Availability of a bolt could be a hard thing as well. So, you might consider getting an action and building what you want on it, or finding a new (to you) .257 Roberts rifle to buy.
Also, I shoot a 6mm Ackley on a Win. post '63 SA. (same case length as the .257 Rob.) and it has plenty of room. Unlike the Rem 700/722.0
