Winchester model 12 shotgun
I just bought my husband a shotgun from a pawn shop. It's barrel length is 18 inches, has a grooved pump slide, the serial # is 1782850, the number matches for the barrel and the receiver. The barrel extends just an inch and a half past the shell tube. It has a smooth, polished stock, ver little wear. Is it worth anything?

I have a model 12 made in 1924. The barrel has a slight bulge in it, and I want to replace it. Will the barrel from later years production fit this gun.

At what end is the barrel bulged ? front,rear or middle ? At the front it could be cut and still used if over 18 inches.Maybe not by you,but someone else may be able to use it after you get a replacement barrel for yours.

The barrel is currently 30 inches. It could be cut off to 20 inches.

There are shops that can shorten the barrel and then thread it to hold screw-in chokes, which would probably work better than trying to get a different barrel to fit the action. 0 -
just to note; all m-12 barrels from 1912 to 1964 are the same (within guage). you could get a new barrel but it takes some knowlge and special tooling to properly fit one.
edit: m-12 barrels aren't interchangeable with out some checking and possible refitting, there is a 'chamber ring' that has to match the chamber end of the barrel exactly.0 -
Replacing the barrel (or whole barrel/fore-end assembly) should work fine; it will result in a mis-match between the serial numbers, which shouldn't be a problem if functionality is your only concern.
Keeping the current barrel and shortening it to just 20 inches (past where you say the bulge is) could make a nice "riot" configured Model 12 (most popular in 12-gauge). If nicely done, even when not a factory riot gun, it would probably sell well (on the auction side). So, if having a riot shotgun wasn't something you wanted, you could do and sell the conversion, then just buy yourself another Model 12 in the configuration you wanted. You might actually come out more "even" money-wise than trying to buy and install another barrel.0 -

I have a Model 12 that had a 30 inch long mod choke barrel and when I was a youg chap chasing all kinds of small game and wanting one gun to do it all and I had the barrel purposely shortened several years ago by a gunsmith and had a cutts compensater installed which was then the going thing for changing shot patterns. The barrel was cut to 20 inchs and the 4 inch long comp installed and for full choke it has a 4 inch long full choke tube and for quail it has the short imp cyc tube
with imp cyc tube the length is about 25 inchs and with the full choke tube the barreled gun is about 30 inchs long.
This works great using the one gun as one size fits all, open cyc for quail and full choke for ducks, etc. I think the old cuts comp and tubes have gone the way of dinosaur eggs since the screw in chokes have taken over and
this was before they were doing screw in chokes and the gunsmith was correct when he told me my patterns would be better than using the quick adjustable screw choke. He was correct.
I would consider keeping the same barrel and checking with a gunsmith about installing screw in chokes. I still use the old 2 3/4 inch model 12 for hunting and just keeps running like the energizer bunny, fit me like a glove and I can operate the action faster than a auto, hold 7, 2 3/4 inch shells when the magazine plug is removed. I have other late model shotguns, but I still prefer my old model 12 as a get er dun gun and it still looks great. (refinished the wood)0
