Value Assesment S&W Revolver
This was given too me and I'm really not into wheel guns. I'd like to sell it or trade it for a .22 rifle of some sort
The only markings not pictured are the serial number and on the frame just under the hammer it reads

The way it was very heavily buffed prior to being reblued, negatively affects it's value. Being chambered in 38 S & W, rather then the much more common .38 Special also will affect value.
Because of the above I would value it in the $100 to $200 range. You might try to obtain a box or two of .38 S & W ammo, to sweeten the deal. It will make it easier to trade or sell, if correct ammo is part of the transaction.

Immaterial if it left S & W, as a Victory Model. Once bubba got his hands on, and worked his magic on the belt sander. Collectors value went out the window. You try to sell it to a collector as a Victory Model. They will laugh in your face. It is what it is, unfortunately. Don't mean beans, what it left S & W as.

After the end of W W II, all firearms were supposed to be confiscated in Germany and Austria. Because of this, The U.S administrators provided in the part of Austria that was controlled by the U.S.. Handguns and M 1 carbines for the local police.

Found out the "G K" marking on the revolver. Represents the German word Gendarmeriekommando. This would be the Austrian police. The number would be the inventory number for the police records. Similar markings are found on Browning High Power pistols also used by the Austrians, in later years.0 -
I thought as much. I figure if I can't sell it here on GB or locally, I might be able to trade it for a Marlin 25N which is something I've wanted for awhile 0 -
Unless I miss my guess, you have a Victory Model. Made during WW 2 in .38 S&W, and later in .38 Special, they were carried by pilots, armed guards at war production plants, arsenals, etc. Serial number start with letter V or SV? Many of the .38 S&W models went to Britain where they were used as combat handguns (with a 200 gr bullet) Bluing was a brushed finish, smooth grips. Check prices for that model.

So I did a little more digging on this S&W that was given to me. Got it cleaned up and here is what I've found.
Serial - 983545
Cylinder Serial - 983545
Left Barrel Side - Smith & Wesson
Right Barrel Side - < 38 S&W CTG >
Top of Barrel -
Smith & Wesson Springfield Mass. USA
Patented FEB 6 08 Sept 14 09 Dec 29 14
Under the hammer reads
GK

On the left side of the frame there is an emblem reading
?sterreich polizei with a symbol in the middle.
From what I've read and been provided they were sent to England, but I didn't see anything about the Austrian Police?0 -
