Screws
I'm looking for an 8-40, about 1" long pan head screw for my T/C Encore rifle. Any suggestions?
I've poked around the net and although I come close, no cigar. My reason for needing them are that I bought a 1" diameter "full bull" barrel in 30.30 AI. The only forend that fits well is T/C's 12 gauge shotgun barrel forend - it's perfect. Unfortunately the screws that it comes with are of a different threading. And the forend screw holes are a bit different, using standard Encore rifle forend screws won't work well.

I need a education on what the difference between 3, 4 and 5 screws means. Does it have something to do with the age of the revolver and where are the screws at? When I see a Smith & Wesson listed as a 5 screw, I can only count 3 or 4. 0 -

I found some 8-40 hex head screws, they'll work but don't have quite the right sized head. I'm looking for a slotted .440" diameter so it's a good fit in the forend.
I bought a 8-40 threading die and may try making my own if I find the right blank.0 -
Sounds like you will need to make it from the next size or 2 up. Start with the correct head profile, turn off threads to correct shank size and then die on the 40 threads per inch. Some of the big gunsmith screw kits might have one but they will not be the hardened kind. 0 -

No luck on Fastenal on line, but we do have them in SF and maybe something can be found there. No need for the screw to be hardened so that's no problem.
Any thoughts on rethreading the screws that came with it? I'm pretty sure they're 8-32 - they'll start in the screwhole and do about 1/4 turn then bind. Or will rethreading a bit finer just leave me with weak contact prone to easy strip?0 -
Brownells has screw blank refills for their kit.
Scroll down to 8-40. You won't need twenty, but gives margin for mistakes.

re-threading 8-32 to 8-40 won't leave much, if anything, of a thread.0 -
I may have some screws here that are that thread. Don't know for sure in the length.
Is the 1" total screw length or 1" of usable thread?

1" usable would be best, but 1" OAL would be doable too. Screw head size is .440".0
