victory model 3 inch?

Iam looking a t a S&W with three inch barrel. it has a serial number ov V637xxx. it has a square butt and diamond wood grips. It says 38 special on the barrel, along with some british proof marks. the other side of the brrel sasy 38 S&W ctg. what do i have?

    A mutilated revolver that originally had a 4" barrel. Made for a US War Dept contract, 1942-1945.

    The Victory Models shipped to England during World War II. Had 5" barrels, and were chambered for the .38 S & W cartridge.

    After the war they were sold as surplus by the brits. Many were rechambered to .38 Special, and had their barrels shortened. This was to make them more viable on the U.S. surplus market. Sadly this turned a collectible revolver, which nowadays would be worth between $300 & $500. Into a bubbaed up POS, worth less than half that.

    Even if he did good work, unlikely he replaced (rather than rechambered) the cylinder to achieve .38 Special use. The original .38 S&W chamber had a larger diameter rear end than the .38 Special, thus setting up potential for hard extraction, case bulging.

    I had my gunsmith look and indeed you were all correct. it is a cut down model. a very nice gun. thanks for all your input
