Help to Appraise German Luger 41 byf P08 SS Marked
Hello,
I ran across a Black Widow that is SS marked and I am wondering if anyone on here might know if this is real or not. I have heard there are many fakes out there. This one appears to be gunked up with cosmoline. The grips appear real to me as well as the mags and the holster appears genuine, however the SS marks I have never seen. Anyone know if this looks real and what the value might be?

If someone is determined enough to mark that pistol and refinish to look that real Then one picture is far from beinging enough for anyone to give a valid answer to your Question.IMHO Only a hands on would be a valid way unless you see a BIG area that you know is fake Like a 1995 Chamber date. or 30 caliber barrel. 0 -

I don't see any glaring evidence of rebluing although late Parabellums have machine marks in the wide open area on the right side aft of the toggle and I don't see them. I would have to handle it to be certain.
I DO NOT get a good feeling about the stamp used to make the SS proof. It's sloppy as some late war stamps were, but it's TOO sloppy. Some were made by jewelers in concentration camps and that one would NEVER have passed inspection by an SS man.
Also, Too many stamps. Acceptance would normally go next to the other acceptance marks Seeing it after the serno also raises a red flag.0 -
We just had a similar post concerning a Belgian made, Model 1922, Browning with similar markings. Here is the photo of it.
My personal feeling is that the markings are phony. Just put on to dupe the unwary, and increase the value of the pistol.0 -
Got to be one of the most ugly set of runes I have EVER seen on a German weapon. One thing the German were consistent with were acceptance stamps....even near the end. Looks fake to me and I would demand to know the history of the weapon (capture papers?) before I would even think to entertain believing it was SS. 0 -
I think r-s is right, but most of the close ups I need to see are either out of focus or not lit enough. The crud doesn't help. Why would you ask for opinions without cleaning it first?
On the bright side, those nice looking fxo mags could bring $200-300 each.
The holster is too badly cracked to save.
In any case, do not put the gun, mags, or loading tool in the holster.

It is not my gun so I cannot clean it. I have owned two black widows before and this looks original however I have never seen the SS stampings and this gun has it. I do believe if it was done later then it must have been in the 50s or 60s. The finish seems to mach the stampings.

Here is the marking on a 98 K. Supposedly it's the real McCoy. 0 -
I would question the trigger, it is blued in stead of "strawed". This would make me think at the least it has been refinished. 0 -
Late BYF luger's triggers were blued and not strawed. 0 -
I would expect to see a Totenkopf also along with the SS runes or stamped somewhere else on the pistol.
Is the pennant a luftwaffe item?0
