gass checks

staeting to cast lead bullets . gass checks? i should have added all i am casting is going to be 9mm & 38 & 357 i do not load hot as my wife shoots it with me around factory is good for me and thanks for all info.

  Depends on what bullet you are casting. Some are designed for gas checks and some are not. Gas checks protect the base of a lead bullet allowing you to load it to higher velocities than a plain base. Many guys still use them although they have lost favor over the years.

  Lyman style go on hard bullets easier than Hornady. There are home made ones out of aluminum, I wouldn't shoot them out of good bore guns.
  
  Generally I run all my stuff barefoot, added velocity obtainable with a gas check is usually not worth it.

  I grew up shooting deer with gas checked 30-30s and 30-40 Krags.
  As has been mentioned, Lyman is, in my opinion, a better product and easier to apply.
  I still have a Krag I shoot some, using a 220gr home cast gas check bullet. I also use a gas checked 215gr bullet in my S&W model 57 41 magnum, for bowling pin shooting. The gas check allows me to load hotter without leading the barrel, still keeping my bullet cost down, compared to jacketed bullets.
