Remington 11-48 issues (Update)
Have had this shotgun since the early '70's. Always worked.
Lately been taking to not extracting empties. Extractor looks good, chamber is clean, tried again and it ejected the bolt handle, not the empty. Found it, took it all the way apart, cleaned it well and looked for anything broken/badly worn. All looked good and put it back together. Fired 4 rounds like it should and ejected the bolt handle again, this time out in the grass.
Got another one on the way but..... Why did it take up this bad behavior? I know, not one of the best ever made by Remington but after having owned it for 40 + years and using it on deer, ducks, doves, geese pheasants, rabbits, squirrels and about anything else, I'm kind of attached to this old thing.

I'm not sure what is up. I haven't worked on a 11-48 for several years. I don't remember how the operating handle is retained. You might try adding a little friction by automatic center punching a few spots or a very slight bow.0 -

Perhaps the above is the problem. Action spring in the stock and recoil spring, might be going bad. After 40? years, might need replacing. If the spring in the stock loses it's resiliency? The bolt might be flying back and impacting on the rear of the steel receiver? With one or both springs being worn?
Also it has a Browning type friction piece, that might need replacing after 40 years.
I had a CZ 16 gauge long recoil shotgun years ago. I'm not sure to this day if the friction piece was missing, or it wasn't made with one. The recoil was so ugly, it was actually painful and got you flinching real bad.0 -

The handle is held in place by a dimple in its underside that a spring-loaded ball bearing fits in. After much use (taking in & out) it might have worn enough to no longer hold in place. 0 -
I don't remember when or who it was, but I remember reading an article about that. On the 11-48, if it gets slack where the bolt locks up in the barrel extension, it will pop the bolt handle out. That area being worn, or just the bolt needing to be stripped and thoroughly cleaned would cause it. In the case of it being worn, they just welded that area, then cut it back down to a tight fit and it solved it. 0 -
Found the bolt handle out in the lawn. Knoew it had to be there, couldn't find it so sprayed a 10 X 10' area it would most likley would be in with Round up. That worked.
Problem was the top of the barrel extension was worn, bolt was not locking like it should. Found a spare barrel in my pile of spares and its back to running like it should.
