Winchester 92 trapper 1929

I am starting here in the event one of you can enlighten me on the particulars, to include your opinion on value, of my Rifle. It looks like someone may have tried to clean some rust up in the past on the barrel. How much will that effect value? Should I touch up the Bluing? I know, I know, but if someone tried cleaning it up already...It is fresh back from the ATF tech. branch and has been added to the registry. Cody museum says they don't have info on this serial range or I'd letter it. I'll let the pictures talk for me. I am planning on selling it on the auction side and I am not sure I have the stomach for a penny auction. What would be a safe reserve? Should I send it to Rock Island? Would it do better at an auction house? Thanks for any insight or opinion.

    Whoever cleaned your carbine certainly attacked it with gusto. That said, there are those buyers out there who pay a lot for the cleaned look as compared to one with varying shades of patina and some scattered pitting and rust. It would appear that a gentle cleaning could have solved the bigger problems and left the gun with at least most of its aged appearance.

    I don't know what your trapper will bring at auction, but starting it at a penny reserve would be a good idea, since it is a very popular piece, unless you are upside down in it, so to speak.

    A short barreled rifle is, by default, an NFA item. For certain collectible rifles, ATF will (upon request) change a specific rifle from NFA status to C&R status. Most such rifles are older Winchester & Marlin lever actions.

    This is one of the few times that I would consider listing a gun with RIA; they seem to have a lot of customers with deep pockets & limited knowledge of firearms, a combination that works well for sellers with unusual guns.

    If money is not a concern, & you just want to keep a gun because you enjoy having it & you want it to look like new, this is the way to go. But, you will never recover the $4,000 investment.

    The only thing of which I am certain is that anything that YOU do to your rifle to improve it's looks will decrease the value. As with any mutilated gun, you will get substantially less than the same model in worn, but undamaged, condition.

    Have any knowledgeable Winchester collectors/dealers have had a hands-on with it? To verify that it's a factory original, Trappers Model?

    Personally if I was a collector, unless i was convinced that it's factory. I wouldn't have much interest, given it's condition. Unless it was the real McCoy. My 2 cents.

    No, no collectors have looked at it while i have owned it. I also posted it on the Winchster's Collector forum and got a TON of good information. Julia's auctions also responded back to me. I think that I am going to send it to them or Rock Island. Still deciding.....

    I will post this here as I did on the WACA forum site also.

    "Just keep in mind that Julia's really doesn't care what the gun sells for as long as it sells and they get their slice of the pie. Therefore it is in their self interest to tell you they can get the moon for your gun so that you will consign it to them. I agree with the advice to list it on GunBroker and keep a larger piece of the pie in your own pocket!"

    Thanks for all of the responses. I decided to list it on the auction side with no reserve. We'll see how it goes.
