rifling in mosin nagants
Can anyone tell me, how to identify good vs bad rifling ( lands n grooves) Do I check by looking down the barrel from the chamber or the muzzle? Any pix of rifling anywhere? Thanks

If the muzzle has been counter bored, it will be difficult to tell from the muzzle end. Some had this done to clean up the cleaning rod damage to the last couple of inches of the rifling, and restore the accuracy.
90% of them will have a dark bore, either from a refurb, or from the corrosive primed ammo that's been shot through them. If the bore is clean(even if dark), and has strong rifling with no pits, you have a shooter.

It is a Chinese m53 dated 1955. The bore is very shiny with well pronounced grooves until the first 1in. of the muzzle. There is still grooves just not as tall as the rest of the bore. It is not counterbored. Shall I leave it alone? I think counterboring would help since there is land n grooves at the muzzle. Crown is in decent shape, also. Thanks for any info. 0 -

Put it on paper. I have seen rifles that have poor looking bores that shoot ok to great, have also seen new ones that don't shoot so well. 0 -

I just received it on Friday. The bolt looked like crape, so they're gna swap it out for a better one. Haven't shot it, yet 0 -
Also, ive read of headspace and firing pin issues with mosins (this is my 1st mosin) I know how to check the firing pin, but is there a way to check headspace without a gauge? I have fallen in love with these rifles and have bought 2-Russian m44s and 1- m91/30. Only one of the m44 has all stamped,matching numbers. Thanks for all the helpful info, guys 0 -
Another forum member here, and myself, checked the headspace on a dozen different Mosins all makes and models. All checked out, so then we tried each bolt in all the rifles and got the same results. Your mileage may vary.
Safest bet when swapping bolts, keep the bolt head with the rifle it came with.0 -
