The small diameter vintage, scopes made for 22's, don't have the greatest optics. All well and good if you just want to hang it on the wall, and shoot it once a year though. More then that I would get one of the modern 1" scopes, from a quality maker like Burris or Leupold.

You will find that the "standard" old school scope for the Browning (or m-61 winnie) is a 4x, 3/4" dia redfield. I believe that this was the Browning offering.

Came in duplex reticle or post reticle. Nice one will cost you. I would consider a modern piece because they ARE so pricey.

Put a nice 2-7 gloss Leupold on it and call it a day.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have been looking at the Redfields and may very well go with one. I definitely love my Leupolds I have on my centerfire rifles and know the glass would be much better and have considered the Leupold rimfire 2x7x28, but really would like to have a period correct on this little rifle.

The first ebay posting that DCS listed definately has the proper mounts. Can't tell about the second one. I like mine on my M-61

I'm guessing when the price of the little Redfield pops up the usual reaction is surprise. But, they are very good scopes that really look right on the small Browning. I picked up a Japan made Browning a few years back. No scope, but it had the older smooth sided cantilever mount. I wandered around the gun store a bit more and someone had by chance put a 3/4" Redfield 4X on a Ruger 10/22. Store owner sold the scope with Redfield mounts to me for a very good price.

Larger scopes probably provide for better shooting, but I think the smaller scope looks best and works pretty well.

Go with the period correct scope. You may have to look around for a while to get a clear scope but that's half the fun. and the combo will look great!
